As a kinesiology (study of movement/ pre-physical therapy) major, I decided to interview one of the most influential people in my career-path decision making process: Melanie Massey Groves. I babysat Melanie’s two daughters at the beach this past summer, so I had tons of fun with the kids but grew very close to her. As I saw how motivating and effective Melanie was in her life and career, I was inspired to follow a path very similar to hers.
Melanie is the owner of Melanie Massey Physical Therapy, MoJoy Art Studio, and MOCO motivational coaching. Melanie has attended school at University of Louisiana at Monroe (the Northeastern Louisiana University), Louisiana State University, and Louisiana State University at Shreveport Physical Therapy School.
Melanie Massey started her physical therapy clinic so that she could accommodate children in the West Monroe/Monroe, Louisiana area, and it grew from there as she added on to accommodate for adults and provide both occupational therapy and speech therapy on top of physical therapy throughout a business that has grown to five clinics.
When hiring new people, Melanie always gives them a strength test to find where they are naturally gifted. She has found that when people are assigned jobs according to their strengths, they are more energized and therefore more effective employees. Melanie herself scored communication as one of her top five strengths and quoted, “Communication is a gift, and not everyone has it.” As a motivational speaker and business owner, she has to make presentations all the time. She uses personally painted watercolor slides for every image in these. As a result, she puts an ample amount of planning into these. She mentions that “good presentation is not accidental, it’s always intentional”
As an example, she described a company retreat that is coming up that will be full of watercolor presentations and group work. She already has planned who will sit where, what they will be doing, and who they will be doing it with. Her intentional planning will hopefully prove to be effective as she is trying to make many changes across her cooperation.
As an effective communicator, Melanie maintains her own personal blog. She started it a while back when a relative had cancer as she asked for prayers. As more women followed her and her life, she formed a “tribe.” She kept this group of followers updated as her life continued and she dealt with more struggles, such as adopting her two daughters.
Her goal for the blog is to keep it updated daily, but she sometimes gets into a “funk” and gets less consistent. Though it used to just be a blog updating others about her personal life, she wants to make its purpose more to pair daily life with inspiration for others. In regards her blog, Melanie said that less people actually subscribe to hers now because blogs are becoming “less alluring.” They are becoming “passé,” or a thing of the past due to new mediums such as social media, email newsletters, and developing technology that she is not even aware of.
This developing technology has made society “too techy,” according to Melanie. It affects technical communication in the workplace because she and her personnel find a lot of new communication techniques “foreign.” For this very reason, Melanie is looking at hiring someone who is more “techy” and knows how to effectively communicate using all mediums of technical communication. So how important in technical communication? It’s important enough to get someone hired, so I’d agree with Melanie in saying, “It’s important enough.”
